I just realized that I collect keys.

Unpacking my desk, I realized that I have a tendency to save keys from different points in my life. I have the key to the storage shed that held 50lb bags of lime and the chalk machines used to line baseball fields in a sleepy Baltimore neighborhood. This was my first job, circa age 14. For some reason I also have the key to the garage at my first house in Ann Arbor. Even though I hated living in Ann Arbor and we never even locked the garage. When I donated my car last year, I kept one of the keys for no apparent reason, regardless of the fact that I will always equate that car with a period I would actually like to forget. I have keys from a friend’s apartment that she moved out of almost 3 years ago. The list goes on. And I’m pretty sure I know what lock each one opened at one point. I kind of wish I could bring myself to throw them out, but I think it would feel like throwing away money.
